Veraison
Yesterday as Pearl and I were walking in the vineyard before heading home we came upon the start of version in the Syrah. This is when the grapes start to ripen and turn from green to red. Syrah is usually the first to begin this process. They are a long slender bunch which will turn quite dark. The wine produced will eventually get blended with our Mourvedre.
These hot days are so far creating a beautiful crop for us this year. We still have quite some time to go before harvest.
One year we had a hail storm in July.
One year we had a hurricane come through in September.
We have been told this is farming.
We have learned a lot about farming in general and growing grapes specifically. When everyone has a bad yard due to the heat, we have a good year for our grapes. Michael was watched carefully those first few years by our neighbors. (He was a new farmer then) They let him do things as they said he needed to learn. We will have our 20th harvest this year, hard to believe. Please let us know if you would like to come out and help, we will add you to our list. We usually begin around labor day with the whites and the reds will ripen in September, sometimes into October. Come by for a visit and see the vineyard and taste what we are serving now.
